An electric dirt bike is the gift older kids dream about: real knobby tires, a twist throttle and the feeling of riding a "real" motorbike, without the noise, fumes and maintenance of a gas engine. But a dirt bike is also the most powerful kind of ride-on a child can get, so it pays to choose carefully. This guide explains what to check before you buy, which gear to add, and what to choose instead if your child is still too young.
Quick answer: which bike for which age?
| Child's age | Best choice | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 3 to 6 years | Three-wheel motorcycle-style ride-on (stable, no balance needed) | 6V Chopper-Style Trike |
| 3 to 8 years | 12V or 24V ride-on scooter or trike | 12V Kids Vespa, 24V Freddo Spider |
| 6 years and up | Two-wheel electric dirt bike with a twist throttle | 36V Freddo Electric Dirt Bike |
What to look for in a kids electric dirt bike
1. The age and weight rating
Start with the manufacturer's rating, not with how tall your child looks. Our 36V Electric Dirt Bike is listed for riders aged 6 and up and up to 80 kg (176 lb). A child should be able to sit on the seat with both feet reaching the ground and squeeze the brake lever comfortably before riding alone.
2. Speed control, not just top speed
Top speed matters less than how the speed is delivered. A stepless twist throttle lets a beginner roll at walking pace and only go faster when they are ready. The Freddo dirt bike goes from walking pace up to 15 km/h (9.3 mph), so it can grow with your rider's confidence.
3. Motor and battery voltage
Kids dirt bikes usually run on 24V or 36V. Higher voltage means more torque for grass, gravel and small slopes. Look for a brushless motor: it is quieter, has fewer parts that wear out and needs no maintenance. Our bike uses a 36V, 350W brushless hub motor powered by two 18V 9Ah batteries. Learn more about voltages in our guide to 36V ride-ons for kids.
4. Tires and brakes
Air-filled rubber tires grip far better on dirt and grass than hard plastic wheels, and they soften bumps. For stopping, a disc brake is more predictable than a simple motor cut-off. The Freddo dirt bike has air-filled rubber tires and a rear disc brake.
5. Ride time and charging time
Expect up to about 50 minutes of riding per charge on the Freddo 36V bike, depending on the rider's weight and the terrain, and 6 to 9 hours to recharge with the included charger. Plan to charge it overnight before the first ride.
6. Safety features
A key ignition stops younger siblings from starting the bike on their own. Note that dirt bikes do not come with a parental remote control: the rider controls the speed, which is why the age rating and a gradual start matter so much.

Safety gear to buy with it
Budget for gear at the same time as the bike, and make it part of the gift:
- A properly fitted helmet, always. A full-face helmet offers the most protection on a dirt bike.
- Gloves for grip and to protect hands in a fall.
- Knee and elbow pads, long pants and closed shoes (no sandals).
Ride on private property, driveways, trails and grass, with an adult watching. Kids electric dirt bikes are not meant for public roads.
Not ready for a dirt bike yet? Motorcycle-style ride-ons for younger kids
If your child is under 6, a two-wheeler with a throttle is too much. These ride-ons give the same "motorbike" look with far more stability:
- 6V Freddo Chopper-Style Trike: a three-wheel chopper look for ages 3 to 6, up to 66 lb, with LED lights. One of our best sellers.
- 12V Kids Vespa Scooter: an officially licensed Vespa for ages 3 to 8, up to 66 lb, with Bluetooth music.
- 24V Freddo Spider: a two-seat, three-wheel motorcycle for ages 3 to 8 with rear suspension and a 2.4G parental remote control.
Browse them all in our kids motorcycle ride-ons collection.
Electric or gas for a child?
For most families, electric is the easier choice: it is quiet enough for the backyard, there is no fuel to store, nothing to tune and no oil changes. You simply charge it like a phone. Gas mini bikes are more powerful, louder and need regular maintenance, and they are usually meant for older riders.
Battery care through the Canadian winter
Ride-ons are not waterproof, and snow, slush and puddles can damage the electronics, so the riding season usually ends with the first snow. Before winter, charge the battery fully, store the bike indoors in a dry place and follow the storage instructions in the manual. If a battery ever needs replacing, you can find one in our ride-on batteries collection.
