Few ride-ons say "adventure" like a four-wheeler. Kids electric ATVs (or quads) have the chunky tires, wide stance and handlebars of a real off-road machine, scaled down to a safe size and speed. They are just as much at home on a suburban lawn as on a gravel driveway at the cottage. This guide covers how to choose one, from a first 6V quad for toddlers to licensed 24V Can-Am models for older kids.
Our kids ATVs at a glance
| Model | Age | Seats | Max weight | Top speed | Ride time |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6V Freddo Mini ATV | 1.5 to 3 | 1 | 44 lb | Walking pace | 30 to 45 min |
| Can-Am Renegade 24V | 3 to 8 | 1 | 66 lb | 8 km/h (4.97 mph) | 50 min |
| Can-Am Outlander 24V | 3 to 8 | 2 | 110 lb | 8 km/h (4.97 mph) | 45 min |
1. Start with age and weight
The age and maximum weight on the product page are the most important numbers. A toddler needs a small, light, slow quad; a five-year-old will be bored on it within a month. As a rule:
- 18 months to 3 years: a 6V mini quad. The 6V Freddo Mini ATV weighs only 11 lb, rolls at walking pace and is light enough for indoor play in winter.
- 3 to 8 years: a 24V ATV with more power for grass and small slopes, like the Can-Am Renegade 24V.
- Two kids, or a growing child: a two-seat ATV with a higher weight limit, like the Can-Am Outlander 24V (up to 110 lb).
2. 6V or 24V?
Voltage is a quick way to compare power. A 6V quad is gentle and suits the smallest riders on flat ground. A 24V quad has much more torque: our Can-Am models use four 200W motors, which helps on grass, gravel and gentle hills. If you are unsure, our guides on 6V ride-ons and 24V ride-ons explain the differences.
3. One seat or two?
A single-seat ATV is lighter and easier to store. A two-seater lets siblings or friends ride together and usually has a higher weight limit, so it lasts longer as kids grow. If you have two children close in age, a two-seat ATV or a side-by-side UTV avoids a lot of arguments.
4. Tires, suspension and seat
Look for wide EVA rubber-like tires: they are quieter and grip better than hard plastic. Both Can-Am models have EVA tires, full suspension, a leather seat and two-point seat belts. Bright LED headlights and Bluetooth music are a bonus kids love.
5. Speed and control
Kids ATVs are controlled by the rider with a handlebar throttle or pedal and a forward/reverse switch. Unlike many ride-on cars, our ATVs do not have a parental remote control, so choose the age range carefully and stay close during the first rides. The Can-Am Renegade 24V also has a switch for different speed modes, so beginners can start slower.
Why choose a licensed Can-Am kids ATV?
Freddo Toys works with BRP to make officially licensed Can-Am ride-ons for kids, with the real Can-Am look and badges. Read more about our partnership with BRP or see all Can-Am ride-ons for kids.
Safety tips for kids ATVs
- Always wear a helmet, and add knee and elbow pads for older riders.
- Ride only on private property (lawns, driveways, trails) with an adult watching, never on public roads.
- Respect the seat count: one seat means one rider.
- Avoid steep slopes, puddles, wet grass and snow: ride-ons are not waterproof.
- Charge the battery fully before the first ride (8 to 12 hours for our 24V ATVs) and after each use.
ATV or UTV?
An ATV is ridden like a motorbike, with handlebars. A UTV (side-by-side) is driven like a car, with a steering wheel, and most of ours include a parental remote control, which makes them a good option for younger or less confident kids. Compare them in our kids UTV collection.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best ATV for a 3-year-old?
Most 3-year-olds are ready for the Can-Am Renegade 24V, rated for ages 3 to 8 and up to 66 lb, with a gentle speed mode. For an 18-month-old to 3-year-old, the 6V Freddo Mini ATV is the safer start.
How fast does a kids electric ATV go?
Our 24V Can-Am ATVs reach up to 8 km/h (4.97 mph). The 6V mini quad moves at walking pace.
Can two kids ride the same ATV?
Only on a two-seat model, like the Can-Am Outlander 24V, which has two seats, two-point belts and a 110 lb limit.
Do kids ATVs come with a remote control?
No, our ATVs are driven by the child. If you want a parental remote, look at our UTVs or our ride-ons with remote control.
