Ride-On Toys for Toddlers: What to Choose for a 1, 2 or 3-Year-Old

A first ride-on is a big milestone. It builds balance, leg strength and confidence, and it keeps little ones busy indoors during the long Canadian winter. But toddlers change fast: what is perfect at 12 months will be too slow at 3 years. This guide explains which type of ride-on fits each age and which of our toddler models we recommend.

Quick guide by age

Age Best type Why
12 to 18 months 3-in-1 push car with parent handle Starts as a guided ride, then becomes a walker and a foot-to-floor car
18 months to 3 years Foot-to-floor ride-on No battery, builds leg strength, safe indoors
18 months and up 6V electric ride-on A first push-button ride at walking pace
2 to 3 years and up 12V ride-on with parental remote The parent steers and stops until the child is ready

12 to 18 months: a 3-in-1 push car

Before they can push themselves along, toddlers love being pushed. The Ford Raptor 3-in-1 Push Car is designed for 12 to 36 months: it starts as a parent-guided ride with a push handle, becomes a walk-along support, and finally a foot-powered car, up to 55 lb.

18 months to 3 years: foot-to-floor ride-ons

Foot-to-floor (or "push") ride-ons have no motor: your child sits and pushes with their feet. They are light (around 6 to 7 lb), quiet, need no charging and are safe on hardwood floors and in the basement. Our favourites, all officially licensed:

A first electric ride-on (6V)

From around 18 months, many toddlers are ready for a push-button ride. A 6V ride-on moves at walking pace and is easy to control:

Older toddlers: a 12V car with a parental remote

If your toddler is ready to "drive" but not to steer alone, choose a car with a parental remote control. The 12V Freddo Ranger 4x4 is listed for ages 1 to 8, has four 35W motors, full suspension, EVA tires and a speed range of 2 to 5 km/h, and comes with a parental remote. You steer and stop until your child takes over. Browse all ride-on cars with remote control.

Safety tips for toddler ride-ons

  • Always supervise, and keep ride-ons away from stairs, pools and driveways with traffic.
  • Respect the age and weight limits on each product page.
  • Use a helmet as soon as your child rides outdoors on an electric ride-on.
  • Indoors, foot-to-floor ride-ons are the safest choice for winter play.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best ride-on for a 1-year-old?

A push car with a parent handle, like the Ford Raptor 3-in-1, or a low foot-to-floor ride-on. Most 1-year-olds are not ready for a motor.

Can a 2-year-old use an electric ride-on car?

Yes, on a 6V model that moves at walking pace, or on a 12V car with a parental remote, always with an adult close by.

Are push cars safe indoors?

Yes. They have no motor and plastic wheels, which makes them ideal for indoor play in winter.

When should my child move up to a bigger ride-on?

Around 3 years, most children are ready for a 12V or 24V car. Read our guide to 6V vs 12V ride-ons or see ride-ons for ages 3 to 8.
